Why Window Tinting Matters in Charlotte

What the Local Law Says

North Carolina requires a minimum of 35% VLT on front and back side windows. Police accept readings down to 32% as legal (a 3% variance is allowed).

SUVs, trucks, and vans have no darkness limit on rear side windows or the rear windshield.

Reflectivity cannot go above 20%. Red, amber, and yellow tint colors are not allowed.

Carbon film is more affordable and adds privacy. Ceramic film blocks more heat at the same VLT level, a better choice for Charlotte's hot summers.

Since December 2025, tint checks are no longer part of the annual inspection. But you must now roll down your tinted windows if a police officer asks during a stop.

How to Pick the Right Installer

• Ask for a meter reading after installation
• Check if they have a dust-free installation bay
• Read local reviews, not just national ratings
• Ask about warranty coverage for bubbling or peeling
• Make sure they understand NC law (35% VLT, 32% enforcement)
